2025 will be remembered as one of motorsport’s great years. Championships went to the final round in Formula 1 and MotoGP. Le Mans produced its most dramatic finish in a decade. IndyCar gave us an extraordinary Indy 500. And across every series, the quality of racing justified every alarm set and every session watched.
Formula 1: Verstappen’s Fifth Title
Max Verstappen claimed his fifth Formula 1 World Championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, finishing second in the race while Lewis Hamilton won. The final margin was just six points - the closest championship since 2021 and the most tense final round since that same year.
Hamilton’s first season at Ferrari was remarkable by any objective measure. Four race victories, a genuine championship challenge, and performances in the wet that rank among the finest of his career. The move to Ferrari, dismissed by some as sentimental, was validated completely.
Lando Norris won seven races - more than either championship contender - but inconsistency at the wrong moments cost him. McLaren take the Constructors’ Championship, their first in over 25 years.
MotoGP: Marquez’s Ninth
Marc Marquez’s ninth MotoGP World Championship, and his first on Ducati machinery, was settled at the Valencia finale with Francesco Bagnaia second and Jorge Martin third. The final points margin was 23 points - comfortable enough, but it never felt comfortable.
The Marquez-Bagnaia dynamic within factory Ducati became the story of the year in motorcycle racing. How Ducati managed two riders of this calibre on identical machinery, without poisoning either relationship, is a remarkable piece of team management.
WEC: Porsche’s Triumph
Porsche won both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2025, their first Le Mans overall victory since returning to the Hypercar class. Ferrari were fastest for much of the race, but a puncture in the 21st hour gifted Porsche the lead they never relinquished.
IndyCar: O’Ward Finally Delivers
Pato O’Ward, in his most polished season to date, won the NTT IndyCar Series championship with a race to spare. The Mexican’s victory in the Indianapolis 500 in May was the defining moment - and arguably the most emotionally charged IndyCar victory since Dario Franchitti’s final 500 win.
Alex Palou, the defending champion, finished second in the points. The Arrow McLaren car was the most consistent across all track types, which ultimately proved decisive.
The Best Races of 2025
- F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Rain, safety cars, Norris winning from Hamilton in wheel-to-wheel combat
- Indianapolis 500: O’Ward winning from 12th on the grid with three laps to go
- 24 Hours of Le Mans: Porsche and Ferrari swapping the lead seven times in the final three hours
- MotoGP Australian Grand Prix: Marquez, Bagnaia, and Martin separated by 0.4 seconds at the flag
Looking Ahead to 2026
The 2026 Formula 1 season brings new regulations: smaller cars, new power unit architecture, and a grid that includes several manufacturer changes. The scene is set for another season of upheaval.
