Silverstone is the home of British motorsport - and for one weekend each July, it becomes the centre of the Formula 1 world. The British Grand Prix is one of the oldest races on the calendar, run every year since 1950, and the atmosphere it generates is unlike anywhere else on the tour.
The Circuit
The Silverstone circuit sits on a former wartime RAF airfield in Northamptonshire. Originally the track wound around the full perimeter of the airfield using runways and perimeter roads; today’s circuit is a more refined version that nevertheless retains the high-speed character of those original layouts.
The most famous section is Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel, a series of high-speed direction changes that demand genuine commitment at full Formula 1 speed. Copse Corner and Stowe provide further high-speed challenges, while the Arena section and the infield complex provide overtaking opportunities that the rest of the lap largely denies.
The Weather Factor
Silverstone in July can mean anything from glorious sunshine to torrential rain - sometimes within a single session. The British weather is not merely a cliche; it can fundamentally alter the race, with sudden downpours creating chaos for teams trying to judge tyre strategy.
The 2025 Context
With Lewis Hamilton having left Britain’s most successful manufacturer (Mercedes) for Ferrari, the British Grand Prix carries an extra emotional charge. Silverstone crowds have a long and complicated relationship with Hamilton, but there is no question he will receive an extraordinary reception when he pulls into the grid in Ferrari red.
Lando Norris, as the leading British driver at McLaren, will have the home crowd firmly behind him. A podium at Silverstone would be enormously popular; a victory would be one of the great moments of the season.
How to Watch the British Grand Prix
In the UK, Channel 4 broadcasts the British Grand Prix free-to-air - it is one of the protected free-to-air events in the UK broadcast contract. Sky Sports F1 carries all sessions live. This is the one F1 race in the year where you do not need a subscription to watch live in the UK.
Our Prediction
Norris takes pole, Hamilton wins the race. The Silverstone crowd goes extraordinary. That is the script the motorsport gods would write - whether it actually happens is another matter entirely.
