The FIA World Endurance Championship enters 2025 in remarkable shape. The Hypercar class has ballooned to its largest-ever grid, with manufacturer entries from Toyota, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Lamborghini, Cadillac, and Alpine. The result is the deepest, most competitive top class in endurance racing history.
Toyota’s Dynasty Under Threat
Toyota GR010 HYBRID won four consecutive overall victories at Le Mans before Ferrari broke the streak in 2023. The Japanese manufacturer has dominated WEC for years, but the influx of new manufacturers has changed the landscape entirely. The new Toyota programme is leaner and more focused, but the days of winning by default are long gone.
Ferrari’s Defence
Ferrari’s Hypercar programme has gone from zero to world champion at remarkable speed. The 499P has been class-competitive since its debut, winning Le Mans and taking the WEC title in just its second full season. Defending both championships simultaneously while managing a two-car factory effort is the task in 2025.
Porsche’s Power Move
Porsche returned to WEC with the 963 and has been building towards the front. Their driver lineup is exceptional, combining experienced endurance specialists with touring car and Formula 1 graduates. 2025 looks like the year Porsche finally challenges consistently for overall victories.
The New Arrivals
BMW has made significant progress with the M Hybrid V8. Lamborghini’s SC63 is a serious entrant. Cadillac continues to develop the V-Series.R. The sheer variety of machinery in the Hypercar class means fans can watch genuine battles between fundamentally different technical approaches.
LMGT3: Racing for Everyone
Below the Hypercar class, the new LMGT3 category - based on production GT3 cars - provides spectacular action and a pathway for privateer teams. The grids are large and the racing is close.
The Calendar Highlights
The Sebring 1000 Miles opens the season in the United States, followed by Portimao and Spa-Francorchamps. The highlight is always the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June - the oldest and most prestigious endurance race in the world. The season concludes with the Fuji 6 Hours and the Bahrain 6 Hours.
How to Watch WEC
WEC has its own streaming platform, WEC+ (formerly Motorsport.tv), which offers live coverage globally. Free-to-air broadcast deals vary by country. The Racing Line app lists all available broadcast options for each round and session.
Our Title Prediction
Ferrari won the last title and have the momentum. But Porsche’s resources are vast and their driver talent is exceptional. We expect a straight fight between Ferrari and Porsche for the 2025 Hypercar championship, with Toyota’s experience making them dangerous at Le Mans specifically.
